UPDATE (7/17/13): I have uploaded the 3.0 release which features a larger surface and a indentation for your finger for ultimate comfort and speed in drawing. This one is noticeably better than 2.0.

I designed this holster because I saw the vast array of Nerf accessories and complete Nerf guns on thingiverse, yet no holsters surprisingly enough. The design requirements were that it had to be lightweight, durable enough to last a week of running, hiding, jumping/climbing, and the constant impact tension forces along the plastic that touches the screws into the clip. It must also be made out of nothing but PLA (or ABS but PLA is more environmentally friendly), office/school materials, and the least easy component to find, scrap wood screws or something similar (check your local IT place, they probably have thousands of screws and would probably be more than happy to let 1, 10 or 100 of them go).

Why did I need sweet aftermarket Nerf accessories you might ask?
Every year a group of nerds at my university host a Humans vs. Zombies event which I gladly attend. It goes on for a week and the humans must survive going to classes and traversing campus on foot as well as on missions after dark without being bitten (tagged) by a zombie. They can fight or flight, either shooting at them with bright orange Nerf guns (any modification to the color of the Nerf gun is strictly prohibited - we are on a college campus after all), throwing grenades (balled up socks), or sprinting away, though this can be tricky towards the end of the week when zombies are everywhere. The zombie will then be stunned to 15 minutes allowing you to get to class or grab the antidote vials from the health department, similar to capture the flag, during mission gameplay. Its basically a week long game of Nerf tag, with a CTF element to it.

Last year I found myself fumbling around in my sweatshirt pockets to grab my sidearm (Nerf Jolt single shot) which could have resulted in my infection. Oddly enough, this game seems to have above average activity around the engineering building, and honors/natural science buildings (I wonder why). Because I have enough credits that I am taking mostly engineering specific classes (I'm in EE + MSE minor ugrad program), I spend upwards of 75% of my day in or near this building -- one that is red hot on the zombie radar. Bad news for us humans.

In order to adapt, evolve, and ultimately survive as a human, I needed to use the new tools at my disposal as of this year. I have access to a MakerBot Replicator 2 and 2X, and after seeing a bunch of Nerf accessory models and using some 3D modeling software on our lab PCs, I decided to give it a whirl.

I have uploaded all the files needed to print the holster as pictured as well as a link to the dart holster. There is only a version for the 2 dart model, because honestly if your into the HvZ game or Nerf accessories enough to be printing them, you probably will want those two extra darts to be very accessible.

This is my first thingiverse upload, and relatively close to first attempt at 3D modeling/design. Comments and constructive criticism are encouraged!

To Use:

Download:
nerfholsterclip.stl (a derivative of radio belt clip by Shaputer: thingiverse.com/thing:12796)
- Good results with 30% infill, 3 shells, .3 mm layer, 225c (filament dependent - I like the black sainsmart because it matches the paint on the toy with good contrast, and prints well)

nerfholsterbody3.0.stl (a distant cousin of Nerf Jolt EX-1 dart holder by Caboose: thingiverse.com/thing:39241 -- I have included the older body prototypes for engineering process/improvement evaluation purposes - don't waste material on them)
- Good results with 80% infill, 3 shells, .4 mm layer height, 225 C

nerfholsterrelease2.0.stl (V. 2.0 is better than 1 in every way. Keep a lookout for V. 2.1 coming soon!)
- Good results with 80%, 3 shells, .2mm layer height, 225 C.

Minor assembly required. This holster is supposed to be reminiscent of the Blackhawk! SERPA holster. It features a quick release right over the trigger. This also makes it more difficult for bad guys (or zombies) to steal your gun and use it against you. The real one has thousands of dollars of R&D behind it, can stand up to punishment of raiding crack houses and everyday duty carry by police officers, or the lighter use of civilians. It also has springs and nice shapes. This one needs to last a week, be similar in operation to the real one, and be able to be assembled quickly (I started design on day one of the game this year) and with everyday/office objects.

To assemble, first start with the clip. Find some scrap woodscrews somewhere (or you could buy some at a hardware store but its just a temporary plastic holster). We have plenty of screws at our IT office. We would gladly give a user a handful as our drawers are practically overflowing with them. Next, simply take the release and insert it into the slit on the side as pictured. You may need to file down the sides with a nail file (go ask your lady friends for one), or better yet an actual file. Cut a thin paperclip and bend it into a wire. stick it through the holes to create the hinge mechanism, and twist/cut with pliers or Leatherman/multi tool to desired shape/neatness. Next take a rubber band and attach to both points as pictured. Double or even triple twist this thing around the post once you have drawn enough slack to get good tension. Congratulations! You now have a lean, mean, zombie-hunting machine, made out of common office supplies ready to defend yourself and the other survivors at your university!

Note to MakerBot Industries webmaster/staff: this is not a weapon nor can it be reconfigured to be one, so please do not censor this thing to stop the spread of weapons. I agree, there are plenty of them out there, more than needed. But holsters are not the cause of gun crime in the United States any more than spoons (or large drinks) cause our obesity problems.... OK maybe 1000 calories of sprite isn't very healthy by any means, but banning them only makes it more expensive to get the quantity you want.
